Khlong San MAKE: A Creative Collaboration Empowering Student Innovation
Khlong San MAKE is an exciting collaborative project between FabLab Bangkok and Social Innovation Laboratory (CIS), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, bringing dynamic reskill and upskill workshops to schools across Khlong San, Thonburi, and Bang Rak, nurturing young innovators in our communities. One of our recent schools was with Santa Cruz Convent School, where we introduced Product Design 101: Packaging Design with a Sustainable Theme.
A Day of Creative Inspiration
In this 1-day workshop, students dived into the world of sustainable packaging design using conceptual cardboard projects. They explored the principles of design and practiced their cutting and assembly skills while learning how to turn ideas into functional prototypes. The hands-on experience left students inspired and equipped with practical knowledge.
From Workshop to Real-World Application
The journey didn’t stop there! FabLab Bangkok extended its support by providing students access to professional-grade tools like Autodesk Fusion 360 and expert guidance in product design. Adopting an internship-like approach, students gained valuable skills in basic digital fabrication and design software.
The Highlight? Students designed eco-friendly packaging that featured the Santa Cruz Church symbol, seamlessly blending tradition with innovation. As one of the iconic landmarks of both the school and Thonburi, Santa Cruz Church stands as a testament to the area’s multicultural harmony, coexisting alongside temples and mosques. This design celebrated the unique culture of the community while promoting sustainability.
The product featured custom-made natural watercolors crafted from flowers, fruits, and herbs. This initiative enabled students to streamline production processes, champion sustainability, and create market-ready designs—opening doors to entrepreneurial opportunities and hands-on innovation.
