Sakon Nakhon Tech Camp: Inspiring Future Innovators with FabLab Bangkok

At Tech Camp, students from rural areas experience a unique opportunity to ignite their curiosity and creativity through STEAM-based learning. A Social Design Project by the Center of Innovation for Society (CIS), KMUTT, this initiative, in collaboration with FabLab Bangkok, is designed to empower students with hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

Recently held at Ban Kuan Bun School, Sakon Nakhon, the camp was a lively blend of education and fun, where students engaged in exciting workshops and activities that sparked their interest in technology and innovation. Guided by the FabLab Bangkok team, the workshop featured 3 engaging sessions that introduced students to fascinating concepts and practical skills.

1. Mar Rover Car Assembly Workshop:

The workshop encouraged students to dive into hands-on learning by assembling a rover car from individual parts. Not only did they gain an understanding of how motors and solar cells work, but they also learned how to harness solar energy as a power source. Students explored 2 operational modes for the rover car:

Using solar cells as the primary battery

Using a rechargeable battery for alternative power

This workshop sparked curiosity about renewable energy and mechanical systems, while empowering students to experiment with real-world solutions.

2. EMG Controlled Car competition:

In the Competition, students explored the fascinating connection between muscle activity and motor control. By using Electromyography (EMG), they controlled a DC motor, engaging in a group competition that challenged their creativity and innovative thinking. The activity opened students’ minds to new technologies and approaches, and the energy in the room was tangible as they raced their cars and brainstormed solutions.

This hands-on experience with muscle-driven technology was a perfect example of how science and engineering come to life in innovative ways.

3. Solar Toy Car Workshop:

In the Workshop, students learned how to assemble toy cars powered by solar cells. They practiced basic soldering skills to modify the cars by rechargeable batteries. The workshop also encouraged creative thinking as students used materials like wood, plastic lids, and glue to design and build their own custom cars. The fun of seeing their creations come to life, powered by the sun, was an unforgettable experience for all.

Throughout the day, students not only honed their engineering and problem-solving skills, but also experienced the joy of teamwork and collaboration. Watching their excitement as they powered up their moving creations was truly inspiring. The confidence and knowledge they gained from these hands-on activities will fuel their passion for learning, and no doubt, inspire them to become the next generation of innovators and creators.

Tech Camp has proven once again that education can be both fun and impactful, and we can’t wait to see how these young minds will shape the future!
