Zinc-Air Fuel Cell Workshop – From Basics to Advanced Principles

In collaboration with FabLab Bangkok and Asst. Prof. Dr. Nutthapon Wongyao, a leading expert in hydrogen engines, Assumption College hosted an innovative 1-day workshop on Zinc-Air fuel cell fabrication.

This hands-on experience introduced students to the principles of electrochemistry and digital fabrication, transforming theoretical knowledge into practical application. The workshop was designed as an engaging engineering-based experience, providing students with the opportunity to explore cutting-edge energy solutions.

Workshop Overview

The workshop focused on the fundamental aspects of electrochemical energy generation, guiding participants through the fabrication process of a single Zinc-Air fuel cell. Students explored the key components of fuel cell construction:

  1. Anode: Zinc (Zn), serving as the electron donor.
  2. Cathode: Manganese oxide (MnO2) and graphite, facilitating the reduction reaction.
  3. Electrolyte: Potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution, enabling ion exchange and conductivity.

By preparing and assembling these components, students successfully created a single-cell system capable of generating electricity, reinforcing their understanding of electrochemical reactions and energy conversion principles.

Learning Outcomes

hrough hands-on experimentation, students gained valuable insights into:

  • The fundamental principles of electrochemical energy conversion.
  • The role of different materials in constructing a functional fuel cell.
  • The application of digital fabrication techniques to enhance precision and efficiency.
  • The challenges and potential innovations in fuel cell technology.

Future Applications

Beyond theoretical learning, the workshop empowered students to explore sustainable energy solutions. By integrating electrochemistry with digital fabrication, this initiative demonstrated the potential of innovative engineering in addressing real-world energy challenges. The experience also encouraged students to think critically about the future of renewable energy and fuel cell advancements.

Conclusion

This collaborative effort between FabLab Bangkok, Assumption College, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Nutthapon Wongyao approaches the significance of experiential learning in driving scientific curiosity and technological progress. As students continue their exploration into energy solutions, workshops like these serve as a stepping stone toward a more sustainable and innovative future.
